Azarenka vs Ostapenko: prediction for the WTA Indian Wells tournament
On October 15, Victoria Azarenka will play against Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-final of Indian Wells tournament. Who will record a victory in this match? The answer is in our prediction.
Victoria Azarenka is successful at North American hard tournaments and a competition at Indian Wells proved it once again. She achieved great results at those tournaments.
Belarusian player had a slow start in the current tournament. In the first match against Magda Linette Azarenka had some problems in the first set, but in the second one her opponent had to withdraw from the match due to a leg injury. In the match against Kvitova Azarenka got advantage out of her opponents' mistakes and recorded a victory in straight sets (7:5, 6:4).
In the round of 16 match against her compatriot, Sasnovich, an experienced Azarenka gained momentum and recorded a confident victory over Aliaksandra (6:3, 6:4).
In the quarter-final match against Pegula Azarenka was considered an underdog. American player was looking confident throughout the tournament. But Azarenka's experience and her tactical skills helped her to record a victory (6:4, 6:2).
Not many people could predict that an inconsistent Jelena Ostapenko will reach the semi-final of Indian Wells tournament. Latvian player has a huge potential, but before that she failed to achieve good results at prestigous tournaments. But Ostapenko managed to surprise everyone.
In first two matches Ostapenko had weaker opponents. Victories over Hsieh Su-Wei (6:3, 6:0) and Putintseva (6:3, 2:6, 6:3) were not so surprising.
In the round of 16 Ostapenko made a sensation, beating Iga Swiatek (6:4, 6:3). Young Polish player failed to contain the attacks of her opponent in that match.
A quarter-final match was extremely difficult for Ostapenko. Shelby Rogers is also an offensive player. Players exchanged sets, in the third round Ostapenko was losing 1:3, but she refused to surrender, won the fourth game being 0:40 down at her serve. After that Latvian player won five games in a row and eventually recorded a victory (6:4, 4:6, 6:3).
All Azarenka's matches finished in two sets, just like the only head-to-head match
In five out of six most recent matches of Ostapenko no more than nine games were played in the second set
Opponents played against each other only once, at 2019 Roland Garros. Azarenka recorded a victory in straight sets (6:4, 7:6). Belarusian player is also a favourite in the semi-final of Indian Wells. We can only agree with that.
Throughout the tournament Azarenka's performance is improving. She is playing smart in every match. Ostapenko is able to put up a good performance as well, but she is just not consistent enough to do it on a regular basis. We think that she won't be able to beat the experienced opponent.
Our prediction - Azarenka to win
In the only head-to-head fixture opponents played 23 games. Ostapenko is in a good form, so she can win one set, when she finds her rhythm it is extremely hard to stop her. We offer to place a bet on total over.
Our second bet is on total over 21 games
